The end of February/beginning of March has been crazy, crazy, crazy! School has brought with it an all-time high level of stress, as we prepare for the SOL tests and deal with sixth grade "senioritis". Oh, believe you me. It exists.
Things that bring me copious amounts of stress:
1. math eCARTs
2. broken phone
3. broken GPS
4. If the Girl Scouts are a Christian organization, then why do their cookies come during Lent? And why didn't I think through this whole giving-up-chocolate-for-Lent thing BEFORE I bought 3 boxes of cookies??
Things that do not:
1. girly time w/ Britt & Bri
2. executive suites & rooftop dancin'
3. my mom's Native American turquoise bracelet
4. puppy Penny snuggles
5. Aveda pampering
6. kids in my class sticking up for one another :)
7. book club
8. de-stress talks w/ PK :)
9. clever pieces of writing
10. wonderful co-workers
I just needed to see that the good outweighed the stinky.

Time for an Update...
Ok. Yet again, I've started another blog & haven't followed through w/ regular posting. Can I use work as an excuse? Please?
Nevertheless, it is a new year & maybe I should add "keeping blogs updated" to my list of resolutions.
Anyways, here are some updates:
1. I have now been living in the city for 5 months. I have been teaching for 4 months.
2. I'm a lot better at driving around DC and more comfortable with using the metro.
3. I don't have to use my GPS anymore to get to most places! haha
4. I have been able to give people tours of old town & I have some recommendations for food, shopping, etc.
5. My school won the 2012 governor's award! :)
6. I love my job and the people in my life right now.
7. Penny is doing well!
8. I'm a bit distracted right now, b/c I'm watching the movie Julie & Julia, and all of the food is looking really good.
9. I think I have some pasta in the pantry
10. I'll finish this blog later!

What's Been Goin Down
The past two weeks were a near-literal whirlwind. What the heck is up with all of these natural disasters? My first week of school was only 3 days long...
BUT EVERYTHING IS GREAT! :) My kids are out-of-control-well-behaved. You say "work quietly" and they do. You turn off the lights, they stop talking. You smile, they smile. Sixth graders follow directions! It's so great.
Last night was Back to School Night. It was a bit nerve-wracking, waiting for all the parents to arrive & "size me up" per say. Everything went pretty smoothly, though. I even cracked a couple of jokes & got some laughs (I can't tell you how many times I have joked w/ the kids & received blank stares...it's a bit disheartening actually. That never happened in fourth grade!)
In other news, my furniture came! Well, almost all of it. I'm still waiting on my enzio chair, entertainment center, and wall mount for my mirror. It's better than nothing, though! No more sitting on the floor 24/7 for me!! I'm so happy w/ how everything looks...it's really coming together, yeah boy.
I'm trying to think of what else I need to share. Different thoughts have been popping into my mind over the last couple of weeks & I'm now wishing I had jotted them down as soon as they entered my brain...
Hmmm well I had dinner w/ Andrew & Colleen on Friday night & that was great! Colleen told me about this great program where you can do art & drink wine...I'm in! I have little free time on my hands right now, but I want to spend some of it getting involved in activities around the city. I think I'm going to take a yoga class in old town. I found a young adults/Bible study group. The last thing to check off on my list is a cooking class of some type. Those are pretty easy to find around D.C. though.
Penny is doing well, thanks for asking! :) Her nails are getting a bit long though, poor babe. I tried to cut them myself but, well, you can imagine how that turned out. She is definitely enjoying the new furniture! Haha...as I was typing that, she jumped up on the couch. Also, don't mock me too much but I definitely bought her a type of puppy ice cream called "Frosty Paws." Yes I did.
Brittany spent the night Sunday night, which was fun! We got about four hours of sleep & I had to teach the next morning...sooo basically it was a college flashback! Speaking of sleep, I should probably get some! Toodle-loo.

And I'm thankful for TWO working elevators in the apartment building! Woo!

Let's Get it Started
Welcome to Teacher Work Week! This past Friday, I started going into my new elementary school to set up my classroom. Lemme tell ya - it is a daunting task! Whoof. I worked last Friday from 8:30 am - 8 pm and today from 8:30 am - 7:30 pm and there are STILL things to get done. I have a bunch of ideas for a classroom theme in my decorations, but I'm thinking the sixth graders might be a little too cool for that. I'unno.
I keep writing myself little notes, so I won't forget to get anything done around the classroom. So far, I've moved the desks, set up my desk, decorated bulletin boards, organized textbooks, organized an entire classroom library (oof), etc. etc. etc. And I hadn't even thought about things like setting up a phone voice mail and getting things laminated...but it's ok, I'm still right on schedule! :)
This past Friday night, I went out dancin' with Siobhan. I hadn't seen that girl in forever and it was so fun to catch up! On Saturday, I ran to Wal-mart and was one of those silly people who stocked up on water bottles, for fear of Irene. Then, I spent the rest of the day cuddling up w/ puppy Penny & watching movies. It was so enjoyable. I hadn't had a day like that in awhile. On Sunday, I visited Britt Britt & finally saw her new home and school. Then, I visited James & Jacob's family (since they now are a package deal), and we talked about our teaching jitters. I'm excited to hear how his first day of teaching fifth grade went today. We also worked on some music.
Tomorrow is a "secret activity" day in school. All I know is that we're going to be doing a team-building exercise and that we're allowed to wear comfy clothes. All I keep picturing is the episode of the Office where they have their "Beach Day." If only... But, I think tomorrow's gonna be memorable for my staff, as well. Apparently last year they went bowling. I love it.
I'm still waiting for my furniture to arrive. My dad said that everything is in the warehouse except for the sofa & 2 chairs for my living room. Guess it'll be another week or so of floor-sitting. That's ok, though. Lately I haven't had a whole lot of time to sit anyway!
Pen Pen is cute as always. She is currently behind me, chewing her bone. Maybe I have too much free time on my hands, but I could've sworn she was drinking her water to a rhythm. When your only roommate is your dog, you really notice her quirks. A resident in my building told me that Penny was beautiful and that she should be in a dog show. I thought that was hilarious, but I also felt a little proud haha. I guess we need to master "sit" and "stay" first, though.
Ok, my back is starting to hurt & I need to get a few things done before bed. But, as a quick final side note: I threw away the coon toy. It became too much of a health hazard to all.
Night Night!
And I'm Thankful For: kind co-workers :)

ohmygiddygoshgosh
This is the umpteenth blog I've started...it's kinda crazy. I think this one will stick, though, because I will have tons to write about this year.
I am currently sitting on the floor in my new apartment. The only pieces of furniture in my living room right now are my tv & Penny's dog bed. So, sitting on the floor wasn't really a preferred choice.
Penny is approaching me with what is left of her "coon" - a nonstuffed doggy toy, which formerly resembled a raccoon. I hid it from her b/c I was worried she would choke on the nearly-demolished remaining pieces of fur. She just found it and gave me a sly look as she brought it out of hiding. Oh boy. She's definitely entertaining.
Anyways, enough about my sweet dog. I'm watching Bye Bye Birdie on my new tv (which, by the way, was from pk). I think I can roll with this whole "on demand" thing. After living without tv channels for the past year, I am phased by pretty much anything on the tube.
Honestly, I am really concerned about the hazardous coon toy...
Ok. Other happenings: I'm attending a week-long orientation program for teachers who are new to my county. That translates to getting up at 6 and getting really bad blisters on my feet (which had been molded to the shape of my flip flops). The clock is telling me it's time to go to bed so I can do it all over again tomorrow.
Goodnight!

And I'm thankful for: letters from kind friends <3
